CARE OF CHRISTMAS GREENS AND WREATHS

Extend the life and enjoyment of your fresh greens by following these easy steps:

Soak Greens- Immerse in cold water overnight or up to 24 hours. The needles will soak up moisture. Good locations for this job are a laundry or bath tub.
Dry- Allow greens to drip dry for an hour or so in a shady well ventilated area.
Spray- WITH Wilt Stop until dripping wet. This seals the moisture into the needles, extending the life of your greens. Do not spray Princess Pine roping or Juniper Berries.
Keep cool- Keep greens in as cool a location as possible, out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Remember that a wreath hung on a door in between a glass storm door will bake in the sunlight and not last as long. Hang the wreath on the outside of the storm door for a longer life.

Fresh greens and wreaths look and smell great inside of your home ! Add bows and pinecones for simple and traditional decorating. Have a vision of your perfect decorating item ? Bring it to us and we will create it for you or supply you with the materials and instructions to create it yourself !

LIVE CONTAINER CHRISTMAS TREES

Living Christmas trees are a memory maker that can last a life time. Used on your porch or patio, they say "Welcome to Our Home" when decorated in traditional style. Or, use indoors for up to one week as your holiday tree, just be sure to plant it as soon as the Holidays are over. Living Christmas trees are a perfect way to enjoy family tradition and have the added benefit of a new tree in your landscape. Some Christmas celebrations are important enough to commemorate by planting the tree that was an intimate part of the Holiday.

IT IS ADVANTAGEOUS THAT BEFORE THE GROUND FREEZES YOU LOCATE AND DIG THE HOLE FOR PLANTING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, EVEN BEFORE PURCHASING THE TREE !

BEFORE DISPLAY

Place the tree in an adequate sized water tight container or provide a tray larger than the container to hold water.
Place tree in a cool frost-free area (garage or enclosed porch) for approximately one week before displaying. This will gradually introduce the living tree from outside to inside. A tree that is dormant and then exposed to warmth will start to grow. You want to avoid any quick resumption of growth. During this time, check the tree for signs of insects and treat before taking into the living area of your home.
The soil should be kept moist during this conditioning period. Never add fertilizer as this will initiate unwanted growth during dormancy.
The moisture content of the tree can be prolonged with the use of an anti-dessicant spray such as WILT STOP.
IN HOUSE CARE

Place the tree away from heating vents, fireplaces and direct sunlight. This could cause excessive drying of the tree
Use only miniature lights to avoid overheating.
Since your live tree is out of its' natural environment, the shorter time on display the better chance of survival. Five to ten days is preferred inside your home.
Keep soil moist, but do not leave the container standing in water.
POST HOLIDAY CARE

Acclimate the tree by placing it in a cool frost-free area (garage or enclosed porch) for approximately one week before planting.
Refer to our PLANTING GUIDE for instructions on how to plant a tree.

The survival of your living Christmas Tree is not guaranteed.

SELECTING AND CARING FOR YOUR CUT CHRISTMAS TREE
All of our trees are displayed free standing so that you can see all sides.  Most of our trees are under roof to keep them dry and free of snow and ice accumulation.

When selecting your tree, make sure that the “handle” at the bottom is long enough to allow the trunk to fit into your tree stand.  Request that some bottom branches be removed if necessary.  You can use these extra branches for other decorating.
Every Christmas Tree sold here is drilled, shaken (to remove loose needles), given a fresh cut, baled with biodegradable netting and loaded into or onto your vehicle.
Take your tree home and immediately place it into the stand with hot water.   If using a tree bag, place it over the trunk and make a hole for the trunk to go through.   Once a fresh cut is made, the tree MUST be put into water within two hours or it will start to form sap to “heal” the cut and then will not drink water.  If needed, place the fresh cut trunk into a large bucket of water until you have your stand ready.  NEVER ALLOW THE CUT TRUNK TO GO DRY !  If the tree is not put into water, another fresh cut needs to be made before setting into the stand.  Do not bruise the cut trunk or allow it to get dirty as this will inhibit water uptake.

Use a stand that fits your tree !  We suggest ‘BOWLINGS LAST STAND’ or the STAND STRAIT System, the only stands we stock.  Ask us what size stand is appropriate for the size tree you have chosen.  As a general rule, stands should provide 1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter.  Also keep in mind that a smaller stand will require more frequent refilling.  Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit the stand.  The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed.
ALWAYS USE HOT WATER AND A PRESERVATIVE every time you refill your stand.  The first few days the tree can drink up to one gallon of water, so check your stand at least twice a day.  DO NOT USE aspirin or sugar, this does nothing for the tree and could lead to a build up of bacteria in the water which can cause a bad odor.
Keep your tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, heaters, heat vents and direct sunlight.  Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process and result in less water consumption each day.

CHECK THE STAND DAILY to be sure that the level of water does not go below the fresh cut on the trunk. With many stands, there can still be water in the stand even though the base of the tree is no longer submerged in water.  NEVER allow the fresh cut to go dry !  We have convenient long watering tubes so that you do not have to crawl under the tree…some even sing to you to let you know the stand is getting low on water !
Apply WILT STOP, an anti-transpirant, to the branches to help prevent moisture loss and needle drop.  The more moisture your tree has, the stronger the scent will last.
Use of miniature lights will produce much less heat and reduce drying of the tree.
Always inspect light sets prior to placing them on the tree.  If worn, replace with a new set and do not overload electrical circuits.
Always turn the lights off before going to bed or leaving the house.
Monitor the tree for freshness.  After Christmas or if the tree is dry, remove it from your home.

Check with your local municipality regarding tree recycling.  Consider laying the tree beside your bird feeders and bird baths until Spring to give the birds safe perching spots.
With proper care your tree will stay fresh throughout the Holiday Season.

TYPES OF CUT CHRISTMAS TREES

All of our Christmas trees are free standing so that you can see the entire tree on all sides to help you make your selection easier. We have many trees under roof so that you can see your tree dry and free from snow and ice accumulation. We are proud of our selection and services and many customers who came with their parents to choose their tree years ago now bring their children to continue the tradition. Just please do not tease Jim about his age !

NOBLE FIR- These royal beauties are shipped to us from Washington state. This tree has a horizontal branching structure that is great for holding many ornaments. The branches are very strong so they will hold larger and heavier ornaments. It is a deep green color and has a strong pine scent with short, soft needles. The Noble Fir has a lot of history. The first ships were built from Noble Fir wood due to its strength. We are one of very few Garden Centers to sell this tree, as the freight costs more than the trees ! These are the first to sell out so shop early for this unique specimen.

Concolor Fir- This unusual tree is grown in Pennsylvania. Concolor has long, soft needles of a bluish-green color with a very unique citrus scent. This tree has a gorgeous shape and is the second type to sell out!

Douglas Fir-This popular tree is also grown in Pennsylvania and has short, soft needles on strong branches. Douglas fir tends to be very thick and wide at the base.
Fraser Fir- We carry Fraser firs grown in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. It has short needles that are green on top and silver underneath. This is the tree most consider to be the "traditional" tree. The Fraser Fir can only be grown at high elevations as temperatures above 70 degrees will cause needle drop during growth seasons. The North Carolina Fraser Firs tend to hold their needles longer than the Pennsylvania grown varieties.

Every Christmas Tree sold at Jim Jenkins Lawn & Garden Center is trimmed to your specifications, drilled, shaken to remove any loose needles, given a fresh cut, baled with biodegradable netting and loaded into or onto your vehicle. We realize that you have many choices for your Christmas Tree purchase and we would like to thank you for supporting a locally owned and operated family business. Jim Jenkins has been in business 30 years and we think that we have some great services that set us apart, not just our large selection and varieties of trees, wreaths and greens.

OVERWINTER FALL MUMS

Many people have a difficult time overwintering fall mums. There are two basic reasons for this:

  • Planting too late and not allowing the plant to establish itself in the ground.
  • Not mulching the plant to protect against temperature extremes.

If you have had trouble over-wintering fall mums, try this method:

  • Keep mums in their pots. Once they have been frosted and turn all brown, cut them back to within one inch of the soil. Be sure the soil is moist, if not, water.
  • Next, place the pot in a protected area, whether it is in an unheated shed, garage, cold frame, against a building or under the protective branches of an evergreen tree. The idea is to protect the plant from getting as cold as the regular outside temperature.
  • If placing the plant outdoors, cover it with 6-10 inches of mulch or 12- 18 inches of leaves.
  • If keeping the plant in an unheated building, place it on top of some newspapers or magazines to help insulate the roots, then surround the plant with more papers just to protect them from any drafts and keep them a little warmer.
  • If keeping the plant inside, check it once a month to see if it needs to be watered. If dry, water. When the weather turns mild in March, bring the pots outside and place them where they will be watered and fertilized throughout the summer, or plant them in the ground. See our fact sheet on how to grow and care for fall mums.

HOW TO GROW AND CARE FOR FALL MUMS

A very popular plant for late season color is fall mums, also called "Garden mums" or "Hardy mums". Fall mums were once known as Chrysanthemums, but taxonomists have recently changed their botanical name to Dendranthema x grandiflora. Fall mums are available in a wide selection of colors, flower types, shapes and sizes. They are a low maintenance, easy to grow plant that can be kept in containers or grown in beds. They are drought resistant and generally free of insect and disease pests.

PLANTING
Most fall mums are purchased and planted from late August into September. They prefer to be planted in an area that receives full sun, but most cultivars can get by with a half day of direct sunshine. For ultimate growth, plant your new fall mums in fertile well- drained soil. Poorly drained soil is the leading cause of winter mortality. Young plants in small containers should be planted 18-24 inches apart. Mature plants can be planted at any desired spacing providing they are planted no closer than just touching their neighbor. Fall mums in containers need to be planted in the ground BEFORE the first hard frost !

WATERING
Fall mums should never be allowed to wilt…especially newly transplanted plants. Check your mums every other day for watering until you become familiar with their needs, particularly during dry spells. Be sure to thoroughly water-in your new transplants.

FERTILIZING
Newly planted fall mums will not require any fertilizer this season. During the next growing season begin feeding your mums as new growth emerges with Schultz fertilizer. Feed your plants at least monthly until August.

OVERWINTERING
After several hard frosts have blackened the plants, cut them back to within one inch of the soil. Mulch to a depth of 3-4 inches. The purpose of mulching is to keep the soil frozen.

REGROWING…the following Spring
Once your fall mums start re-growing, remove the old stems. Start feeding every month until August., To encourage branching and compact bushy growth it is important to pinch the plants in the early spring. Once the plant has reached 4- 6 inches, remove 1-2 inches of the new growth on every shoot. After the plants have grown 3-5 inches from the first pinching, it is time to pinch again (1-2 inches). Stop pinching your plants around mid-July. This may seem like a drastic measure, but come fall you will be rewarded with compact bushy plants that are robust with flowers. Your mums can be divided every two years in early spring.

ORNAMENTAL CABBAGE AND KALE

Plant these beauties now and watch them grow and change colors as the temperatures become cooler. These hardy plants will become bright purple, white and green and will shine through even when the snow starts to fly ! Pair them up with Fall Mums, pumpkins, cornstalks and scarecrows for the ultimate Fall display!

FALL IS FOR PLANTING !

Fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. The cooler temperatures mean less watering and less stress on the plants. The plants will have plenty of time to grow a great root system before the ground freezes which means a stronger, healthier plant next year. You can continue planting through mid-October. Here at Jim Jenkins Lawn & Garden Center we restock fresh, new stock even now so that you have the same great choices as in Spring. Fall is also the best time to take advantage of GREAT Sales and Discounts, so plan next years' landscape now and SAVE !

WHY PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS AT ALL ?
Environmental Benefits of Fall Planting

Plant trees and shrubs first-they are the most valuable plants in the landscape because they are the most useful. They are energy savers, air-conditioners and wildlife havens.

  • Shade trees can reduce your heating/cooling costs by 10-50% !
  • In one year an average tree produces enough oxygen for a family of four for one year.
  • The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equilavent to 10 room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours per day.
  • One acre of trees and shrubs has the ability to remove 13 tons of particles and gases annually.
  • The amount of fossil fuels used for heating/cooling is reduced by using trees and shrubs to modify temperatures.
  • Planting trees and shrubs remains the cheapest and most effective means of drawing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
  • One tree can remove 26 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually, equaling 11,000 miles of car emissions.
  • Tests done in a mall parking lot showed a 31 degree difference between shaded and un-shaded areas.
  • 2.6 tons of carbon is sequestered in a year by one acre of trees and shrubs.
  • Street-level particulate pollution can be reduced by 60% by trees and shrubs lining an urban street.
  • One 12" caliper Sugar Maple can remove 5200 mg. of lead from the air in one year.
  • Trees and shrubs intercept water, store some of it, and reduce storm runoff and the possibility of flooding.
  • Air quality can be improved through the use of trees and shrubs and turf. Leaves filter the air we breathe by removing dust and other particulates. Leaves absorb carbon dioxide and other air pollutants (such as ozone, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide) and give off oxygen.
By planting trees and shrubs, we return to a more natural, less artificial environment. The natural cycles of plant growth, reproduction and decomposition are again present, both above and below the ground.

One of the best ways to increase your home's resale value is by adding trees and shrubs to your landscape. Adding trees and shrubs can increase your home's value by 10-15% ! September, October and November are the best months to plant trees and shrubs. Late season planting reduces stress on the plants and gives them a chance to establish a strong root system. Fall is more forgiving than dry summer months by offering cooler temperatures and less intense sunlight. Water requirements diminish during the Fall months. So add value and beauty to your home AND help improve the environment, PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS.

Jim Jenkins Lawn & Garden Center has a great selection of Ornamental and Shade Trees available for the Fall planting season. Along with the dependable favorites like Crimson King Maples, Red Sunset Maples, Eastern Redbuds, Forest Pansy Redbuds, Dogwoods, Magnolias, Cherries and Pears we have many unusual and hard to find varieties you cannot find anywhere else ! We are here to help you make great choices for your landscape and WE DELIVER AND PLANT , so adding beauty to your landscape has never been easier. Here are just a few examples of the great selections we have to offer you:

  • Sourwood Tree: Small ornamental tree with clusters of drooping, fragrant white flowers which cover the entire tree all summer like a white lacy veil. Fall brings on multi-hued colors.

Sourwood Tree

  • Ginkgo Biloba Tree: Unusual fan-shaped leaves, the only two-lobe leafed tree in America! Turns an incredible clear yellow color in the fall. This male variety does not produce fruit. This trees' origin has been traced back to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth!
  • Autumn Flowering Cherry: Deep pink buds open to light pink flowers in early spring, then these soft pink flowers return in the fall for an encore!
Ginkgo Tree
  • Katsura Tree: The name may sound like a sneeze but this tree is nothing to sneeze at! Blue-green foliage that turns iridescent shades of apricot-orange in the Fall. It also changes color from the inside out; most trees do the opposite.
  • These unique trees are just a few of the trees we have looking for good homes where they can provide years of shade and enjoyment. Don't forget: we deliver and plant trees for you so you can just sit back and enjoy!
